My sisters Judy, Jane and I have so many happy memories of our first cousin John when we went to stay at “Courabyra” Albury, back in the 1950’s. John told me one day to always check my bed for tiger snakes before jumping in to sleep. He said “the blighters can get terribly angry Pete!” , so I always took awhile to fall asleep! Apart from his cheeky sense of humour I so admired his love of animals, including horses and cattle. To see him prepare his stock for the Albury Show with polished harness and buckles, the horse with such a shining coat and the hooves all blackened up, it was brilliant to see. What skills John had as a stock agent and horse trainer, matched also as a storyteller par excellence. John told us of his visits to Tumbarumba when he was a young lad, staying with Ron “Jigger” Heinecke. John would confidently hop into bed only to find “Jigger” had organized an odd thistle or two in the inviting bed and another time, the bed was cheekily short sheeted!! A wonderful husband to Doreen and father to the their boys. Respect for family history and consideration for others needs and interests -that was John Henry Waite, an outstanding Australian who has left significant marks of excellence and kindness forever in our hearts.
